Autumn Trends 2024 - The Key Trends

Following on from our previous blog post "Autumn Trends 2024 - Key Colour Trends", we are now going to dive into all the keys trends that are going to be influencing what you make. From the silhouettes that will define the season to 'must have' pieces that you will want to add to your wardrobe.

Some of these trends you might recognise from our Spring trend report, following with the recent shift in the fashion industry to long term trends as opposed to short term 'fads'. You will also find some already in your wardrobe, ready to be combined with all your new season makes.

Leopard Print

Leopard print never really goes out of style, it is always there in the background and is one of the most timeless prints you can have in your wardrobe. However this season it made a big appearance, from leopard trench coats to the classic 'nice top and a pair of jeans' look, with everything from dresses and skirts in between.

For this trend you can choose from comfortable basics in Danish Design Cotton Jerseys, or opt for a transitional linen viscose blend piece- trousers, long jackets or skirts are our top choice.

Barrel-leg Trousers

This is a trend that has steadily been growing for most of 2024, although at the start of the year it was unclear if this 'barrel leg' or 'horseshoe' style was going to stand the test of time in the fickle world of fashion. However the Autumn catwalks declared that this was a trend that would be sticking around for a while, the shape now seen on both tailored trousers and jeans.

Luckily sewing pattern designers have delivered a range of patterns to help you recreate this trend, whether you are choosing to make jeans or trousers. You can choose to embrace this trend with a subtle shape or make a statement.

The Return of Boho

As we mentioned in our Spring Trend report, one collection stood out and grabbed the attention of the fashion world more than any other - Chemena Kamali's debut collection for Chloe signalled the return of boho. This collection saw a return of the boho looks from the early 2000's (sticking with fashions '20 year rule'), with romantic and playful styles teamed with practical denim and tailoring. Chloe was not the only show to embrace this return of this trend, with others showcasing soft layers of delicate fabrics.

High Necklines

An Autumn/Winter staple for many, a roll neck jumper probably features in your wardrobe already.  This is a piece that works both on its own or as an extra layer for those chilly days.

We have a beautiful selection of sweater knit fabrics to make a cosy jumper, or choose a luxurious jersey for an easy layering piece.

Puffballs and Peplums

Taking the '20 year rule' back even further, the puff ball hems of the 80's are making a return alongside the more wearable peplum tops we shared in our Spring trend report. The puff ball shape was seen on tops, shorts skirt lengths and also longer midi or maxi lengths.

For a softer look make this in drapey viscose or for something with more of an impact choose a cotton. Either way this is a look that will take you through the coming party season.

The easiest way to create this look is to take a wide, loose top pattern and add a channel for elastic to the hem, giving an instant puffball hem that can easily be changed to a regular hem by removing the elastic.
