The trend for timeless wardrobe pieces that we have seen in recent seasons has continued into 2024, with a focus on the wearable as opposed to the outrageous. We have a round up of the key trends that kept popping up on the Spring/Summer 2024 catwalks that we think are perfect for us to recreate as sewists.
If you want to know what colours will be big for this coming season have a look at our last blog post “Key Colours for Spring and Summer 2024”.
Peplum Tops

Big in the 80’s, and making a small return in the 00’s, peplums are back again for 2024. Paired with skirts, high waist trousers (also big this season, see below), or jeans, peplums are taking on a softer, romantic look than the stiffer styles of the 80’s.
Part of this resurgence, and popularity off the catwalk, could of course be contributed to the Ganni Peplum Tie Blouse that everyone is either wearing or trying to recreate. (See below for how to create your own version).
This is an easy one to recreate, by either shortening the skirt on your favourite dress pattern, or choose a loose and floaty pattern like the Indigo Smock top or Mabel top with a peplum option included. The Sew House Seven Romey Raglan dress and top is another option to create your own peplum top (Size 0-20 and Size 16-34). Drapey viscose or soft cotton is perfect for this trend.

Polo Shirts

This preppy style has been revived for 2024, largely due to Miuccia Prada who styled it up and with short shorts or ruffled mini skirts. Other designers followed suit and paired the polo top with midi skirts for a more grown up take on this trend.
The Fibre Mood Amber Top has an easy to wear relaxed feel to it, you can make it in a classic cotton jersey or choose a lightweight knitted fabric for a cosy spring top. If you want to opt for a cosy spring layer, the Style Arc Bert Jumper is perfect in a lightweight French Terry.

High-rise Trousers

Wide leg, high-waisted trousers have been on our radar for a while now, and we are happy this trend is sticking around for another season. Narrow or more tapered legs also made an appearance on the catwalks if wide legs are not for you.
For a more tapered look, the Cousette Magnette Trousers are perfect to recreate this look, or for a wide leg look try Sharlene’s favourite Bella Loves Patterns Billy Trousers. To take this look into the summer months, choose a high waist pair of shorts like the True Bias Dani Shorts in a fun floral print.

Knotted Details

While browsing through many of the Spring Summer collections, this subtle knotted detail was present, whether is was a low slung knot around the nips or a garment cleverly giving the impression of a sweater casually knotted around your shoulders.
Garments knotted at the waist can be a great way to add interest to an otherwise plain garment. The Trend Patterns Knot Front dress is an easy casual dress for woven fabrics, or the Fibre Mood Kamala Dress also features a large knot. For a knitted version you could try the Style Arc Astoria Knit dress (this is also perfect for recreating one of our favourite Sezane dresses).
If you want to go for a smaller, more subtle version of this trend try the Named Clothing Kielo Wrap Dress and Jumpsuit or Lila Wrap Dress, Blouse and Pinafore.

Boho is Back
All images from the Chloe A/W 2024 collection.
So we might be jumping the gun a little with this one… but if you are anything like our Marketing Executive Sharlene, you will be excited to know that Boho is back. Chemena Kamali’s debut Autumn Winter collection for Chloe made waves through the fashion industry, with the announcement of the return of Boho in the form of ruffles, maxi dresses, capes, lace and chiffon.
While we may not be so daring to recreate this look with sheer lace and chiffon, nothing says summer more than ruffles and maxi dresses. Trend Patterns will have you covered with this trend, with the 70’s dress featuring multiple tiers and a ruffle across the bust. For a more subtle take on this trend try the Closet Core Nicks Dress or the Pauline Alice Ibi Dress also has plenty of options for a romantic boho dress.
Romantic shades and floral prints are perfect to get a head start on this trend this summer, along with timeless shades of black and off-white.
