Autumn Trends 2024 - Key Colour Trends

When researching the Autumn Winter trends for the coming season, one thing was very noticeable- many of the colour trends we reported at the start of this Spring are sticking around for the next season. We as sewists will be especially pleased to see this, having spent time making these garments we will be able to transition them through to the new season.

It is refreshing to see this consistency from the fashion industry. While we as sewists are not confined to the current trends that are available in the shops and have the freedom to make what we want, the trends seen on the catwalks will have some degree of influence over what fabric manufacturers produce.

There are a few more Autumnal hues mixed in with the key colour trends for the upcoming season and a colour trend to suit most tastes and palettes. Many of these colours could be seen mixing on the catwalk to create beautiful outfits.

So without further ado, let's dive in to the colour trends that will define the season ahead.

Burgundy

Although Burgundy is a colour that is typically associated with Autumn, it has seen a rise in popularity during the spring and summer months well. This rich shade of red was seen on everything, from garments to footwear and handbags. It was also seen combined with several of the other key colours for this season, but more on that later.

Choose to add a key basic to your wardrobe in a luxurious burgundy jersey, or embrace the trend with a burgundy printed dress or blouse.

Blue

Another colour that is typically associated with Winter styles in blue- classic shades of navy and royal blue are always prominent. However this season lighter shades have been added into the mix, with pale icy shades making an appearance.

Whatever shade you favour, this is a shade worth investing your time into sewing. Wide leg trousers or classic striped shirts will blend seamlessly with your autumn wardrobe, or add a twist to a classic dress in a monochrome blue print.

Khaki

Another shade that is common during the Autumn months is khaki, however this season saw many designers sending full khaki and olive green looks down the runway. The timeless appeal of this fabric again makes it worth invest our sewing time in.

For the transition between seasons choose blouses, shirts, trousers or skirts that can be easily layered depending on the weather.

Pink

While pink is not a typical autumn/winter shade, there is rarely a season that passes at the moment without this shade featuring in some shade or form. This season sees a softer pink taking centre stage, from soft boho shades at Chloe to the pink bow dress at Prada that had many hailing it as a moment that would define the season.

We are looking to add more pink transition piece to our wardrobe this season, with easy to layer shirts and jumpers (matching trousers optional). Linen shirts will be a surprising hit for your autumn wardrobe, with their natural and breathable qualities making them ideal for layering.

Yellow

A surprising addition to the Autumn Winter collections was yellow. The colour was prominent in the spring summer collections, and we listed it as a key colour combination with teal last year in our "Autumn Winter Colour Trends 2023" blog, so again any investment you have made in sewing with this colour has paid off. and who doesn't want to see some of this happy colour on a grey winter day.

Jackets, dresses and skirts are all perfect pieces to sew in this cheery shade.

Mix and Match

While each of these key colours stood out on their own, they were also mixed together to create cohesive looks. Yellow outfits paired with burgundy or blue shows, or a pale pink shirt layered over a burgundy roll neck jumper, you will be able to mix and match the above garments to create your next autumn winter outfit.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Autumn Trends blog, when we look at all the key garments you will want to sew this season.
