The Philippa pants sewing pattern was created out of a need for simple but sturdy tapered leg trousers, slim fitting and high waisted. The side seams are completely straight, just as jeans and pants were typically made in the 1930’s and ‘40s. The straight side seams make this pattern perfect for selvedge denim, which is a type of denim woven on narrow looms. The Philippa pants include waist shaping at the front/back, two back darts and features a classic button fly, back pockets and belt loops. The pant length ends at the ankle, but can be lengthened or shortened as desired. This pattern is drafted for woven non-stretch fabrics.
Skill level: advanced
Materials/supplies: Matching thread; denim sewing machine needle; heavy duty button thread for hand sewing buttons; button fly: 1/2" or 5/8" buttons (four for sizes 00-16 or five for sizes 18-22); waistband button: one 3/4" or 7/8" button; 1 1/2 yd of 20" wide light to medium weight fusible interfacing.
Fabric suggestions: 10 - 14 oz cotton canvas or cotton rigid denim (including selvedge denim) with no stretch. Other bottom weight woven fabrics can be used, such as cotton twill, corduroy, denim, drill, etc. If you choose a 12 - 14 oz fabric, be sure to check that your sewing machine can handle the heavier weight first. This pattern is designed and drafted for woven non-stretch fabrics, however some people have used woven fabrics with a small amount of stretch. Keep in mind that this may result in a different fit and you may need to size down.
