Sewing with Stretch Fabric - Make your own Clothes from stretch fabrics - monthly workshops

Does sewing with jersey or knit fabrics, aka stretch fabrics challenge you? Our Sewing with Stretch Workshop is aimed at dispelling all the myths and scary stories about sewing with stretchy fabrics. Once you know how to work with this fabric you will love whipping up a quick and easy sweatshirt, t-shirt or even a dress.

This is a series of monthly workshops, taking place once every month during the period of January to March in 2026. The specific dates scheduled are 24 January, 7 February and 14 March. Each session will be focused on sewing different patterns / garments and ideally using different types of jersey / stretch fabrics.

You can purchase these workshops individually as well, however by purchasing a block of 3 sessions you are saving £25 in total plus it guarantees or space on all of them. 

During these workshops you will learn the techniques you need to master sewing with different types of stretch fabrics, including different stitches and needle types.

In January you will have the option to make your own Billie or Aalto sweater, in February we will be making Arielle top and in March once we build the confidence you will be sewing Brynn cardigan top or a dress. 

Each time you will be spending the day sewing with others in our studio space surrounded by beautiful fabrics, while learning and developing your skills. This includes measuring, making adjustments if needed, cutting out and then sewing. 

Experience:

This series of workshops is for all levels of sewists, from beginners to experienced (as long as you can use a sewing machine). 

Supplies: You will be supplied with a sewing kit including fabric, paper sewing pattern with instructions, thread and any other sewing notions required for making your sweater nearer the time of each workshop, in time for you to pre wash the fabric. We will send you a payment link for this with options of fabrics to choose from along with the workshop exclusive discount code.

You will need to bring your own sewing machine or overlocker on the day. Please let us know in advance if you’d like to borrow one of our machines. 

Group size: there will be space for up to 5 people to attend the workshops but the course will go ahead regardless of the group size. This is an ideal number for you to enjoy company while sewing and also ensure that everyone will have plenty of time with your tutor for tips and guidance. 

Time: 10am - 4pm or 5pm including lunch and tea / coffee break. 

Location: Lamazi Fabrics Studio located in the centre of Horsham in West Sussex

We will provide *tea/coffee and snacks. Please bring your own packed lunch.

What you will learn:

- Tips for cutting out and finding the grain of the fabric

- Types of knitted / jersey fabrics along with samples and what to make from them

- Measuring stretch % and direction of stretch

- How to use a pattern to cut out your fabric 

- How to sew a sweater using a regular sewing machine if you do not own an overlocker

- Type of stitches, threads and needles used for stretch fabric 

- How to add a stretch neckband / ribbing 

- How to insert a sleeve

Please note, this is not an overlocker workshop therefore it will not be converting tips or guidance on how to use the overlocker as this requires a separate session.
