I am thrilled to announce that I (Kathryn @sewnique_) am now part of the wonderful Lamazi brand supporter team.
My first project was to make my two twin girls some ‘same but different’ gilets. I was sent the most incredible bundle of faux furs, cottons with heart prints, matching threads, and a Poppy meets Pomme magazine with two different gilet patterns to try! It also contains a wonderful selection of ladies and children’s patterns, with lots of inspirational photographs too.

My daughter decided the Harper waistcoat was a project which she wanted to try, she is no stranger to the sewing machine so we decided to give it a go!

We opted for no patch pockets as we wanted to show off the beautiful burgundy faux fur. The pattern called for bias binding so my daughters worked together to use some of the heart print cotton to make some rather than using ready made. The cotton pressed beautifully so was perfect for this task. The grid hearts pattern also made cutting on the bias easy as we just followed the corners of the squares across the fabric.

The waistcoat came together quickly, we opted to baste the seams before using the binding to finish them. This allowed us to trim back the seams a little to make the binding easier to attach. We are delighted with the end result, the waistcoat looks amazing over a plain long sleeve T and will get a lot of wear here. The fur is incredibly soft and sewed up like a dream. We love that it is a reversible pattern too meaning we can get twice the wear from it.

My second make was also from a Poppy magazine. This waistcoat/gilet was a little less fitted and included lovely little capped sleeves and collar. Perfect for layering with a winter jumper or dressing up over an autumn outfit.

The instructions didn’t make this gilet reversible, however with a slight change I was able to make it fully reversible too. To do this first I sewed the shoulder seams on both the lining and outer fabrics and then sandwiched the collar and capped sleeves between the outer and lining, sewed the front seams, neck and arm holes right sides together, leaving the side seams and hem open. Next I turned it right side out through the shoulder seams, then sewed side seams with right sides together and finally flipped the outer hem up to the lining hem, right sides together with the gilet tucked inside and sewed the hems leaving a small turning hole, I then turned through the hole and slip stitched the hole closed.

The end result is a beautiful and very practical gilet which can be worn both with the fur side out and the heart print cotton out depending on outfit choices. I love it when a plan comes together!

I am so impressed with this waistcoat project, and can’t wait to see what I make next!
